GUS (Gave Up Smoking) is a community support series for Kossacks in the midst of quitting smoking. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. We avoid discussion of political issues. If you are quitting or even thinking about quitting, please -- join us! You can add GUS to your stream by clicking on the ♥ next to the GUS tag. The GUS Library at dKosopedia is organically evolving, and stocked with free-range information, quit-smoking links, and helpful GUS writing tips.
"A message to all quitters: you don't have to avoid GUS if your latest attempt to quit didn't work out. We won't give you a bad time and we consider the attempted quits as practice for the real quit." (h/t to FG)

I'm having high b/p issues at the moment. Trying my best to fix it. The latest med I was prescribed, lisinopril, wasn't working out at all. I put myself back on the Benicar @ 20mg, so at least I'm taking something and I see my primary care physician today. What I really need is to reduce and/or eliminate the stress from work,  but  ... yeah... I need to be actively working on that again too.

The small Dell desktop computer I was given a couple months ago, after my computer of 10+ years died in April, stopped functioning properly. I didn't lose any data, in either instance, so I'm grateful for that. I have been given a new(to me) laptop(something else I'm grateful for), with Windows 7, and after almost two weeks I'm getting comfortable with stuff. I was using XP on my old computer and the Dell, so there's been a learning curve. Not as bad as I thought but it's still a somewhat different interface.

I started ripping my music discs again, using Windows Media Player as the program, and that's been a learning experience too. I was using I-Tunes before, and it was acceptable, but it has its own share of ... lets just call them quirks as a kind euphemism and leave it at that. I'd made tons of edits, in I-Tunes, but pretty much didn't give a care what Windows was doing with the file(s). Plus I'd ripped everything at the lowest bit rate. I figured I might as well rip them as wav.'s and since I'm using Windows I might as well just use the media program it comes with. I've managed to do about 30 discs so far, and I've edited as I went along.
I really hate the "The" file(s).
It's interesting to pull up stuff I haven't heard in a while. And who I reach for first. Simple Minds, def. The Church. Chem Bros. PSB. Motown. Fabric. Sabbath. Bowie. Madonna. And at least some of the impetus for ripping again is the ability to dump 25 gigs worth of music onto my phone, and bring it to work. I bought a little wireless Bluetooth enabled speaker and can crank out the jams while I do at least some of my tasks.

I was supposed to go to Kansas City in a couple weeks, for a nephew's wedding reception, and planned to take my bike along for some potentially new riding experiences, but I'm going to have trouble just making the rent and utility bill payments for this month. And the annual YMCA book fair is that Friday, the 15th, too and I definitely wanted to go to that ::sigh::

To top off this week, the only decent pair of glasses I have broke. I might be able to get the vision center at work to fix them though. We'll see. I have two older, almost the right prescription pairs I've been using to get me through the past couple days.

Trying not to be discouraged. About anything. Still riding, although I missed almost a full week of miles due to the side effects from the lisinopril. Figured I owed myself a week break anyway though. I've pushed 20,000 miles under my feet the last three and a half years. I AM PROUD OF MYSELF for every single mile. 24,901 miles is the circumference of the earth at the equator, to put things in perspective.

And this update wouldn't be complete, and I wouldn't be being entirely honest with the people who I have the most fondness and respect for online, if I didn't report that after almost nearly four years of sobriety, I've had some beers to go along with my grilling experiences in the past month. I don't know what to say about that other than report it as a fact and I still don't know how I feel about it. I don't know. It was a conscious decision, and I'm not making excuses for why, nor am I apologizing for it, to myself or anyone else. It is what it is. And I'll deal with it. Whatever I decide. I know the people I care about and who care about me will support me and love me, so.... it'll all be ok.

I know I'm posting at an odd time, but this is when I'm generally free to do so, based on the nature of my current work schedule and especially today, given I have a 2:15P appointment to make in south STL County and I haven't been to sleep yet. Worked 4P-1A. I'll be going to bed shortly after publishing this, and will have to catch up with everyone later today, but I didn't want to miss another week. Doing the best I can.

Have you had some experience with the effects of smoking, and want to write a GUS diary or host an open thread? Please sign up in the Butt Can (Tip Jar), and name the day and time that works for you (AM, PM, late-night, early-bird...) Regular diarists' names have been enhanced for your viewing pleasure. Click on the link to learn how to write a GUS diary the easy way. It's really easy. Did I say it's really easy? It is. It's really. "Seriously, it doesn't have to include specific elements or require all sorts of fabulous diary formatting skills. The regulars will make sure stuff gets carried over from diary to diary, so if you want to just tell your story and host for a few hours, that's cool too." (h/t Vctnld)
