Today I received an email from the ACLU, most of which I will reproduce here. It is a call to action, at FANEUIL HALL no less. How many chances do you have to save the Constitution from Faneuil Hall???
Here is the short summary:
Emergency Town Hall Meeting
The ACLU is hosting an EMERGENCY TOWN MEETING on the Bush Administration's Program on Domestic Surveillance, featuring:
US Congressman Ed Markey
ACLU Associate Legal Director Ann Beeson
ACLU of Massachusetts Executive Director Carol Rose
Marc Rotenberg, Executive Director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center.
Monday, January 30, 6:00-8:00 PM at FANEUIL HALL in Boston.
It is HUGELY inspirational to see your neighbors--even if you don't know them--paying attention and mad as hell just like you are.
Please try to come to this event--you don't have to do very much, just be there to support this ongoing issue. And I'll tell you: when I came home from the first one, I was actually singing the preamble to the Constitution out loud, much to the dismay of my housemate.
C'mon. You'll learn something. You'll be inspired. You'll show them we aren't kidding.
More from the ACLU letter, largely MA specific:
This event will launch a CAMPAIGN TO RESTORE THE RULE OF LAW. Please plan to be there if at all possible -- and get primed for the President's State of the Union message the following day!
The Resolution Affirming the Civil Rights and Liberties of the People of Massachusetts (H.B. 1881) is at last on the legislative calendar and could come to a vote at any time. The White House is calling on Congress to vote to reauthorize the Patriot Act before the temporary extension expires on February 3. Massachusetts can send a message telling Washington that common sense and critical civil liberties reforms must be made to the PATRIOT Act before the law is reauthorized. This is one we CANNOT afford to lose -- if H.B. 1881 is defeated, a very different message may be sent to Washington. So your action is urgently needed!
Please call your state representative and state senator as soon as possible and ask them to support H.B. 1881, the Massachusetts Civil Liberties Resolution. Your state senator and representative can be contacted at:
[my reps names here]
Tell them that:
- Passage of this amendment is needed than more than ever, given recent revelations about warrantless surveillance of US citizens in violation of the law.
- At this critical time the Massachusetts legislature should take a stand for basic Constitutional rights, and join the seven states that have already passed similar resolutions.
- 53 towns and cities in Massachusetts have passed civil liberties resolutions, and more than 104,000 Massachusetts citizens voted in the 2004 election to ask the legislature to pass a resolution supporting civil liberties and urging Congress to fix the USA PATRIOT Act. Wherever this "Safe and Free" referendum question appeared on the ballot in the Commonwealth, it was overwhelmingly supported.
If you have called before about this matter, please call again. If your state representative and senator's contact information is not displayed in this email, go to www.wheredoivotema.com. You can get their phone numbers from www.mass.gov/legis or call the State House at 617 722-2000.
And please help spread the word and get your friends to make a call too! Let's flood the State House with phone calls!
I'll bring the orange bandanna again if people want to gather as Kossacks....can anyone make it?
