At Daily Kos, we’re starting a campaign to draft Elizabeth Warren--Harvard Professor, Special Assistant to the President, and 2009 Bostonian of the Year--into the Democratic primary for the 2012 Massachusetts Senate election.
Join us by signing our petition to draft Elizabeth Warren. We will deliver your signatures, and supportive comments, to her personally.
Even if we retake the House and keep the Presidency, it’s going to be very difficult for Democrats to keep our majority in the Senate after 2012. The map is replete with pickup opportunities for Republicans. Of the 33 Senators facing re-election, 23 are Democrats. Further, the GOP has particularly strong chances in states like North Dakota and Nebraska. This makes Massachusetts, currently held by Republican Scott Brown, one of the few places where we must net a much-needed pickup ourselves.
But Scott Brown is popular. So, in order to win in Massachusetts, we’re going to need an energetic candidate who knows how to pick and win fights. We’re gonna need someone who can deliver a populist economic message that connects with the millions of voters facing economic hardship--a message which is distinct from both Wall Street and the Tea Party. And we are going to need someone who has a record of success to back up that rhetoric, so voters know it isn’t just talk.
Elizabeth Warren meets all of these criteria like almost no one else can. As the head of the Congressional Oversight Panel on TARP, she led to fight to expose corruption in the Wall Street bailout. As an outside advocate, and now Assistant to the President, she basically created the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on her own. She is an extremely experienced speaker, erudite enough to have been considered for the Supreme Court, a best-selling author on personal finance, and packs a populist punch in defense of the middle-class.
Last week, we checked with Kossacks in Massachusetts to see what they thought of drafting Elizabeth Warren into the Senate race. An astounding 89% were in favor. Except for Halter vs. Lincoln and Lamont vs. Lieberman, I’m not sure if local Kossacks have ever been this united about a Democratic Senate primary.
Getting 20,000 supporters off the bat would be a huge start for any United States Senate campaign. Getting Elizabeth Warren as a populist standard bearer would be a huge start for us in 2012. You can help make both happen--join the movement to draft Elizabeth Warren.
