Ha. Jeb! Bush never endorsed his former protege, Marco Rubio, after dropping out of the Republican presidential primary. But now that Rubio himself has dropped out, Bush is endorsing Ted Cruz. Because he’s the last best Not Donald Trump hope:
Bush says in a statement to be released by the Cruz campaign: “Ted is a consistent, principled conservative who has demonstrated the ability to appeal to voters and win primary contests.”
“For the sake of our party and country, we must move to overcome the divisiveness and vulgarity Donald Trump has brought into the political arena, or we will certainly lose our chance to defeat the Democratic nominee and reverse President Obama’s failed policies,” the statement continues.
Expect a few more “low energy” cracks from Donald Trump, and for few voters to be moved by the endorsement—there’s a reason Bush got out of the race so early, after all, and this doesn’t exactly help Cruz’s anti-establishment cred—but it does help send yet another message to John Kasich that the cavalry will not be riding to his rescue.
Cruz also picked up an endorsement from the Club for Growth PAC.
