Campaign Action
One of the most powerful moments in a Democratic National Convention that’s been filled with powerful moments was Tuesday night, when the “Mothers of the Movement” appeared. Nine women who have lost children to police action or gun violence filled the stage, with three—Geneva Reed-Veal, mother of Sandra Bland; Lucia McBath, mother of Jordan Davis; and Sybrina Fulton, mother of Trayvon Martin—speaking.
“You don’t stop being a mom when your child dies. You don’t stop being a parent,” Lucia McBath said. “I am still Jordan Davis’s mother. His life ended the day that he was shot and killed for playing loud music, but my job as his mother didn’t. I still wake up every day thinking about how to parent him, how to protect him and his legacy, how to ensure that his death doesn’t overshadow his life.”
It was a moment to stir the soul. Unless you were watching on Fox News, where it was overshadowed by a block of commercials. Fox’s O’Reilly Factor cut from Bill O’Reilly interviewing Karl Rove to commercials … but in a tiny box beside the commercials, you could see the mothers speaking. You couldn’t hear them, they weren’t identified, but there they were. Kind of. When the commercials ended, Bill O’Reilly took over the full screen to talk about illegal immigration.
Then again, maybe we should be glad Fox News treated the mothers as an inconvenient sideline, because you know O’Reilly wouldn’t have had anything to say about them that we wanted to hear.
