Hillary Clinton’s got your 50-state strategy right here: Her campaign is opening an office in Utah. The office opening in Salt Lake City follows Clinton writing an op-ed in a Utah newspaper and some buzz about her having a shot in an expanding field. To be clear, it's a long shot:
The last Democrat to win the Beehive state was Lyndon Johnson in 1964. President Barack Obama was defeated by John McCain and Mitt Romney by wide margins in his 2008 and 2012 bids for the state. In 1992, Bill Clinton actually finished third in the state, behind President George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot.
A really long shot:
Clinton's unpopularity makes Utah probably a step too far for Democrats even in a year where Trump's weakness as a candidate is putting unusual states on the map. Trump leads the state with 39% to 24% for Clinton, with Gary Johnson at 12%, Evan McMullin at 9%, Darrell Castle at 2%, and Jill Stein at 1%. If voters had to choose just between the two major candidates, Trump's lead would grow to 20 points at 53/33.
But we have to assume that the Clinton campaign is not going to the expense of opening an office in Utah purely to troll. They think they can get something out of this beyond some “wow, Clinton is playing in Utah” headlines. Either that or they’re feeling so confident that they have time and money free for a troll on this scale.
