New York Sen. Chuck Schumer will soon become the most powerful Democratic senator in the country. A major reason for his rise through the ranks has been his exceptional fundraising ability, and he’s now sitting on an enormous war chest of $20 million. Schumer could put some of that money to very good use right now—and increase his chances of becoming majority leader next year, rather than minority leader—by directing his cash toward helping Democratic Rep. Patrick Murphy, who suddenly finds himself only narrowly trailing GOP Sen. Marco Rubio.
Murphy badly needs the help because earlier this fall, major Democratic groups like the DSCC felt that their money would be better spent on a trio of races in much cheaper states (Missouri, Indiana, and North Carolina), rather than on a single, extremely expensive state like Florida, especially since the polling didn’t look particularly good for Murphy. But now that Murphy's chances have improved, the DSCC is tapped out and doesn't have the resources to go back into the Sunshine State.
That’s why, according to Politico, none other than Harry Reid is pressuring Schumer to find a way to get back in the game in Florida—and the easiest and simplest way is for Schumer to send some of his own campaign funds to the DSCC, which can in turn then deploy them on behalf of Murphy.
We can add our voices to that call. Schumer is a lock for re-election in dark blue New York, so he can certainly afford to part with a good portion of his campaign cash. Here’s how you can encourage him—politely—to do the right thing:
You should use your own words, but our message is a simple one: “Please send money to the DSCC to help Patrick Murphy end Marco Rubio’s political career.” And there’s more than just the Senate at stake: If Rubio wins re-election, he’d be a frontrunner to challenge Hillary Clinton in 2020. If he loses, he’s kaput. Chuck Schumer can help drive a stake into Rubio’s ambitions once and for all.
In the meantime, let’s do what we can to help Murphy ourselves. Please give him $3 now.
