Because of course he did. Steve King, Iowa’s most infamous white nationalist, sent a tweet yesterday celebrating news that the Trump regime had deported its first Dreamer with DACA protections. Literally nothing else makes this jagoff happier than the suffering of immigrants, so naturally it featured a mug of beer with the caption, “Border Patrol, this one’s for you.” Barely 48 hours before, he was tweeting Easter greetings. But remember, it hurts their feelings when you call them “deplorable.”
According to USA Today, Juan Manuel Montes was deported to Mexico in February, despite reassurance from Department of Homeland Security Sec. John Kelly the very next month that “I can guarantee you we're not going after kids that are fully DACA qualified.” Kelly was referring to an Obama-era program that protects young immigrants from deportation and allows them to work legally. But according to one immigrant rights advocacy group, a DHS spokesperson lied about Juan’s DACA status:
In response to the USA Today about Juan Manuel, DHS said that his DACA status had expired in 2015. The reporter who broke the story, Alan Gomez, tweeted last night in response: “We have seen his ID that says it doesn’t expire until 2018.”
It’s just the kind of lowdown, dirty trick you’d expect from an agency that has absolutely no problem with rounding up and deporting hardworking immigrant moms and dads. No wonder King loves ICE so much. Immigrant advocates in Congress and across the country are absolutely right in their swift criticism of Kelly and ICE’s actions, and they need to keep up the pressure—and Steve King needs to fucking go.
