Some idiot at Fox tried arguing that there really aren't any Trump Russia crimes to investigate. www.mediamatters.org/…
Politifact talked to a few law professors who came up with four. www.politifact.com/…
1: 2002 Campaign Reform Act. Since the foreign Russians illegally made expenditures against Hillary, any coordination with Trump campaign would be illegal.
2. Fraud. Depriving us of “honest services”, such as fixing an election using fraudulent means, is against Federal law, as is conspiring to do so.
3. Public Corruption. This covers a very large amount of territory www.fbi.gov/… but collusion with foreign group to interfere in a federal election is in there according to the professor.
4. Anti-coercion in federal elections. Not discussed in detail here, but if any of the Russian activity applied pressure on any federal election official, then that would be illegal. Considering the Russian hacks, misinformation campaign and illegal release of personal and classified information apparently included a number of officials and even indirectly affected the actions of the former FBI Director, then I think there's a case here too.
The fact that these laws are not commonly brought against individuals does not mean they are inapplicable. The fact is that people aren't usually so insanely corrupt that they commit these crimes. If Kushner intentionally lied on his security forms, broke the Logan Act, the Espionage Act, the Emoluments Clause, or any of these other laws in order to enrich his family at the expense of our country, then he can be criminally convicted, regardless of the rarity of the crimes.
