The number of people who’ll be totally screwed by the Republican tax plan is skyrocketing. Republicans are now planning to use the tax bill for a partial Obamacare repeal that would leave four million people without health coverage next year and 13 million in the next decade. And now the tax bill could endanger Medicare:
Republican lawmakers have largely dismissed concerns about how their $1.5 trillion tax cut will add to the federal deficit. Now, some Democrats are warning the tax rewrite will ultimately be financed by gutting entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare.
The possibility of cuts to safety net programs appeared more likely on Tuesday, as the Congressional Budget Office warned that the tax bill could set off an arcane budget rule that would make deep cuts to Medicare over the next decade.
As an added insult, the corporate tax cuts in the bill would be permanent … while tax cuts for middle-class families would be temporary. Sen. Al Franken summed up the situation:
Do what the man says! Call your senators and representatives now at (202) 224-3121 and urge them to vote no on this healthcare-taking, Medicare-threatening giveaway to corporations and the wealthy at the expense of working families.
