Think of it as a poor people's Jenny Craig, only without the customer getting to make any decisions. The Trump administration's budget has a proposed "reform" for SNAP, the Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program, or what is generally known as food stamps. Because the system isn't controlling and humiliating enough for poor people as it is now, here's what they want to do.
Under the proposal, households receiving $90 or more per month in SNAP benefits will receive a portion of the benefits in the form of a USDA Foods package, which include items such as shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish. […] This cost-effective approach will generate significant savings to taxpayers with no loss in food benefits to participants. It will also improve the nutritional value of the benefit provided and reduce the potential for EBT fraud.
There's no better way to subjugate a person than to control what they can eat, how much of it, and when. Not, that's not a totalitarian kind of approach to social welfare. Not at all.
Does it sound like a totally not "small government" kind of thing for a Republican to want to do? Well, think of a low-income person's pantry as a uterus.
