The Senate has begun what could be as long as two weeks of debate, trying to come up with a solution to keep Dreamers, the young people protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, in the country with a path to citizenship. At least, that's what the Democrats are trying to do. Republicans are trying to roll back decades of immigration law and tear families apart. If you need any more indication of that, here's Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, putting his thumb on the scale.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is throwing his support behind a GOP proposal that lines up with President Trump's immigration framework, as the chamber turns to a battle over the controversial issue.
"I support the president's proposal and my colleagues' legislation to implement it. The Secure and Succeed Act is fair, address both sides' most pressing concerns, conforming to the conditions the president has put forward," McConnell said on Monday.
He added that the proposal is a "fair compromise" and "the best chance" at passing a bill that can get signed into law.
That's patently false and he knows it. He's not going to get 60 votes from Trump's framework because there aren't 10 Democrats who are going to do that. He'd previously said his floor for a vote was 30 Republican senators.
McConnell starting negotiation from the furthest right position he can—Trump's white supremacist wish list so that he can force Democrats to make horrible concessions. He just took the Dreamers and their families hostage, again. Democrats can't play his game. They can't negotiate these young people and their families—and the rest of our immigrant families—away.
