Apparently for the Trump administration, it’s not enough to tear children from the arms of migrant parents as a matter of official policy. It’s not enough to detain babies as young as one in a facility by themselves while their parents get shipped across the country, not knowing when they’ll ever hug again. No, this administration wants to do far worse:
The Trump administration is looking to build tent cities at military posts around Texas to shelter the increasing number of unaccompanied migrant children being held in detention.
Because the administration’s escalated arrests and separation of families at the border have resulted in Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) facilities for detained kids reaching near capacity, McClatchy reports the administration “will visit Fort Bliss, a sprawling Army base near El Paso” it’s search to find a location to detain anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 kids:
HHS officials confirmed that they’re looking at the Fort Bliss site along with Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene and Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo for potential use as temporary shelters.
Even Joe Arpaio, disgraced former sheriff and convicted criminal, called his infamous “tent city” a “concentration camp,” where temperatures skyrocketed to 130 F and melted the shoes of inmates. Human beings don’t deserve to be treated that way, period, but that’s exactly what the federal government may do to kids, according to the report. This is a concentration camp for kids on American soil. How else can you look at it?
