Senate Republicans are absolutely outraged right now. They just can't believe that Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is using Senate procedure to thwart what they see as critical legislation. No, not immigration reform. Not urgent legislation to stop popular vote loser Donald Trump from ripping children away from their parents at the border. No, they're unhappy because they're not getting votes on their pet amendments in the defense authorization bill.
For example, Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) is spitting mad and "accused McConnell and Senate Republican Whip John Cornyn (Texas) in a private meeting Wednesday of blocking his amendment to limit President Trump's ability to impose tariffs, according to sources familiar with the meeting." The most useless of all the Republicans, Sen. Susan Collins (ME), piles on, demanding more Republican amendments be allowed on the floor.
That would be the Susan Collins who is so opposed to the current Trump atrocity of ripping children from their families that she refuses to sign on to legislation to stop it. But she did send a sternly worded letter along with Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) about it all.
Every Democratic senator is now on board the legislation sponsored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein to stop Trump's family separation, and all we're getting from the raft of supposed moderate Republicans is "concern." When they decide to stand up to McConnell, who won't go any further than allowing a vote on immigration reform that he knows Trump will sign, it's not about this atrocious policy. It's about whether their pet projects get votes.
As of now, Corker, Collins, Flake, Ben Sasse (R-NE) and every other Republican wringing their hands and doing nothing is worse than useless. They have two choices, follow their current path and stick with Trump or join with the Democrats to stop it.
There are no Trump opponents in the Senate GOP. They are all complicit in his evil.
