I assume all regular Daily Kos readers are already registered to vote in their respective cities or towns. This is more for friends and family of regular Daily Kos readers who live in Detroit. They are the people I wish to address today.
Today, July 9, is the last day for eligible Detroit voters to register to vote in the August 7 primary, according to the Detroit Department of Elections. The office closes at 5:00 p.m. today.
You’ve got to vote in the primary. If you want to vote for, say, Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, M.D., in November but you don’t vote for him in August and he doesn’t make it to November, it would probably be because you didn’t vote for him in August.
If you don’t register in time for the August primary, there’s still time to register for the November general. And for your own sake you should vote for whichever Democrat is the gubernatorial nominee.
Gretchen Whitmer would be a very good governor, in my opinion. Bill Cobbs, maybe. Young Kentiel White is inexperienced but his heart seems to be in the right place.
Hell, even Shri Thanedar would be better than whoever the Republicans go with. Gay-hating, marijuana-hating, democracy-hating Bill Schuette? No thanks. Lt. Gov. Brian “I had nothing to do with Flint” Calley? Pass.
Though I do wish Thanedar had taken Jack Lessenberry’s suggestion to spend his money on something more productive, like the campaign against gerrymandering.
Anyway, if you do miss today’s primary registration deadline, there is still time to register to vote in November. That deadline is, I’m guessing, October 5, because October 8 is a federal holiday.
