Past presidential candidate and current Trump "lawyer" Rudy Giuliani went on the Sunday shows today to do what Rudy Giuliani does best: Make a fool of himself.
RUDY GIULIANI: [...] And when you tell me that, you know, [Trump] should testify because he's going to tell the truth and he shouldn't worry, well that's so silly because it's somebody's version of the truth. Not the truth. He didn't have a, a conversation...
CHUCK TODD: Truth is truth. I don't mean to go like...
RUDY GIULIANI: No, it isn't truth. Truth isn't truth. The President of the United States says, "I didn't..."
CHUCK TODD: Truth isn't truth? [...]
Todd went on to observe that Truth isn't Truth is "going to become a bad meme." Yes, well, that is what Rudy is known for.
In no less stupid but considerably more substantive news, Giuliani also went out of his way to lie–and let's underline that part, lie, because there ain't no credible way Rudy here is unaware of the most critical public bits of evidence against his client, his client's campaign and his client's dimwitted family–about the now-infamous Trump Tower meeting between the Donald Trump presidential campaign and agents sent by the Russian government.
While openly asserting that "the meeting was originally for the purpose of getting information about Clinton", Giuliani was quite insistent that nobody could possibly have known that this information was coming from the Russian government!
GIULIANI: She didn't represent the Russian government. She's a private citizen. I don't even know if they knew she was Russian at the time. All they had was her name. [...]
They didn't know she was a representative of the Russian government. And indeed she's not a representative of the Russian government!
Because Rudy here is either the most incompetent lawyer Trump has yet hired or a shameless (but still incompetent) liar, here's the exact words of the email Donald Trump Jr. received in setting up the meeting Rudy Giuliani is discussing. It’s been public for a very long time now; we’ll bold the part that Rudy seems to have forgotten.
The Crown prosecutor of Russia met with [Emin's father] Arms this morning and in their meeting offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father. This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government's support for Mr. Trump–helped along by Aras and Emin.
That's the email that set up the meeting. (It went to Don Jr, who was enthusiastic in his response: “if it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”) It was clear from the moment the meeting was suggested that it was "part of Russia and its government's support" for Donald Trump; that was the whole premise. The meeting then took place. There was followup afterwards. This all happened in the midst of a Russian government espionage effort against his opponent; since that time, Uday, Donald and now Rudy here have all taken steps to lie about and/or hide the plain purpose of the Russian government-offered meeting from the public and from federal investigators.
Or, in colloquial terms, They Did a Treason. It's not clear why Rudy Giuliani wanted to hitch his wagon to that horse–he could have just stayed clear of it, continuing his post-campaign career of reminiscing about terrorism in exchange for money–but we can presume he did it because he could not bear the thought of not being on the Sunday shows every weekend. An odd trade, on his part, but a not entirely surprising one. It’s not like Rudy had anything else he stood for before he stood for this.
