Lawless Donald Trump isn’t making any secret of the fact that he thinks that he’s above the law and that, no, Congress isn’t a coequal branch of government in his book.
“We’re fighting all the subpoenas,” he told reporters Wednesday on the South Lawn of the White House. He added that Democrats weren’t “impartial people” (like he is), and that they’re “trying to win 2020” (like he isn’t). So goes Trump’s justification for trying to block every single effort by congressional Democrats to exercise their constitutional duties of providing a check on the executive branch. At almost exactly the same time as Trump was announcing his administration’s policy of total obstruction, news came of the latest rejection.
The White House is also trying to block the testimony of former White House officials who cooperated with the Mueller investigation, particularly ex-White House counsel Don McGahn. That’s going to be a much tougher sell in terms of prevailing legally.
