Sen. Kamala Harris stepped up for women’s health in Alabama following the state’s passage of a law banning virtually all abortions. The 2020 presidential candidate made a fundraising appeal to her supporters that her campaign says has raised $160,000.
“Outlawing access to abortion―including in cases of rape or incest. Threatening to punish doctors who provide abortion care with up to 99 years of jail time. This isn’t a scene from The Handmaid’s Tale. This is happening in Alabama―in our country―in the year 2019,” a fundraising email reads. ”These anti-choice bills in states like Georgia, Ohio and Alabama are a focused, targeted attack led by right-wing groups hell-bent on overturning Roe v. Wade and outlawing abortion completely in this country.”
The money raised will go to four groups: the Yellowhammer Fund, the Clinic Vest Project, ARC Southeast, and the National Network of Abortion Funds.
Pete Buttigieg also asked supporters to contribute to NARAL Pro-Choice America, but it’s not clear how much that appeal raised.
