It wasn’t a week in which it was hard to make the case that any one of the Democratic presidential candidates would be a better president than Donald Trump, but, “Hey, they didn’t accuse members of Congress of treason for investigating them and publicly call on foreign governments to interfere in the 2020 elections” is a low bar to clear, as is, “They didn’t greenlight the slaughter of our allies.” Our candidates can do better, as we saw in the debate and elsewhere. Here are some of the week’s highlights for the top 10 Democratic candidates.
Bernie Sanders released a corporate accountability plan that would “give workers an ownership stake in the companies they work for, break up corrupt corporate mergers and monopolies, and finally make corporations pay their fair share.”
Elizabeth Warren released a plan to slash the influence of big money in politics and empower regular people.
Kamala Harris did not wait for the debate moderators to get around to asking about reproductive freedom. She made it a part of the healthcare discussion—which it is.
Julián Castro, keeping up the focus on Donald Trump’s vicious immigration policies, visited an Ohio woman in sanctuary.
Cory Booker endorsed Marie Newman for Congress against conservative Democrat Dan Lipinski in Illinois.
Pete Buttigieg released a plan for “achieving autonomy for tribal nations and enhancing opportunities for Native people to thrive.”
Joe Biden released a government ethics plan.
Amy Klobuchar took questions on Social Security and retirement security more generally.
Beto O'Rourke is once again holding a rally to compete with a Trump event in Texas.
Andrew Yang had a good moment agreeing with a competitor, and wanted to be sure everyone knew about it. That is a conspicuously non-dick move.
