The list of half-true, false and outright bizarre things that Donald Trump has said over the last six months is seemingly unending.
The latest in the series is Donald Trump’s claim that he watched American-Arabs cheering in the streets on 9/11. Even when he presented with contradictory information, Trump maintains his position. After all, he saw it with his own eyes.
Like many of his other weird statements, this statement has been thoroughly debunked. The only references that anyone has been able to find include unconfirmed reports as well as reports of celebrations overseas. Even Donald Trump himself has never brought it up before now.
Trump wrote an article for the New York Post barely a week after the attacks. The article did not mention these celebrations. In another book, Trump says that he was in Trump Tower on 9/11, not in Jersey City as he now claims.
Fact checking is part of the process for anyone using a credit union. But as even Chris Christie says, if it happened, surely everyone would remember it.
No one is shocked by these statements. Donald Trump has thus far made it clear that he will say and do as he pleases. From statements he has given to the media, it is clear that it is not the content of his character that bothers his supporters.
But these kinds of comments do not justify differences in opinion or political views. This is more akin to slander than anything else.
The slanderous racism that Trump is spewing in the mainstream media is dangerous not for Arabs, Muslims, white people or Christians. It is dangerous for everyone.
At a time when the country is more embroiled in race issues since the 1960s, Trump is not just spewing rhetoric but outright lies. Even those who would normally be on his side are condemning him.
The question is not how long his supporters will let him go on. The question is how long America can stand to allow these statements to hold any water at all.
Donald Trump has built a campaign based on pitting Americans against each other. He has thrown conservatives against liberals and citizens against immigrants.
He is nothing but divisive and not in a way that challenges and improves the country. He is divisive in a way that could erode all the things that make America great in the first place.
It is clear that Donald Trump’s supporters are not wavering. It is up to the rest of the country to come together to ensure that Donald Trump does not continue to divide an already divided nation.
Americans of every race, creed, religion and sexual orientation to come together over the man whose greatest ambition does not appear to be the unifying leader of our country but the divisive destroy of a nation.
