It’s nothing new for Donald Trump to rail against gun-free zones on military bases, but now he’s adding schools to the list of places where everyone should be packing heat:
"I will get rid of gun-free zones on schools, and — you have to — and on military bases," Trump said, to scattered cheers during a campaign rally on Thursday night. "My first day, it gets signed, okay? My first day. There's no more gun-free zones."
Where to begin? Military bases, of course, aren't actually gun-free zones. They’re just not gun free-for-all zones as Trump’s ilk think all of America should be. And Trump can’t repeal gun-free school zones unilaterally on day one, because they’re established by federal law—federal law passed in different versions once under President George H.W. Bush, once under President Bill Clinton by a Republican Congress, and once under President George W. Bush. Oh, and exceptions to the law include people licensed to carry guns. So … Trump wants unlicensed guns in schools, and he thinks it’ll be up to him on day one of his presidency?
Whatever. He’s playing to his base and he’s usually successful at that. No reason to think this will be any different.
