This is terrifying, and exactly what Donald Trump is setting the stage for, with all his talk of rigged and stolen elections. Two Trump supporters spent an entire day sitting outside the campaign office of Jane Dittmar, a Democratic House candidate in Virginia. Oh, and they were carrying guns.
"He turned sideways to be sure that we would see that he has an open carry gun, which is legal, it’s fine, but it's intimidating," [a campaign volunteer] said of one protester. "If he wants to support his candidate that's fine, but don't come here and stare into the office all day."
Wild guess here: intimidation was the whole point. Although to hear the stalkery Trump supporters tell it, they were combating not just intimidation but persecution:
"I'm just trying to provide a voice for someone who might be closet supporters of Trump. Other people that are a little worried to speak out because of possible persecution," he said.
Yeah, that’s just the right voice to provide for terrified Trump supporters hiding in their closets: staring at your political opponents while fondling your gun.
Jane Dittmar, by the way, is a Daily Kos-endorsed candidate running for an open seat in a district Democrats won in 2008. If we’re going to retake the House, we need candidates like her. That means she can’t afford to be distracted or intimidated by Trump supporters and their guns. We may not be able—yet, with this Congress—to fix the messed-up gun laws that allow this kind of blatant scare tactic. We may not be in her district to show up and stand in solidarity at her campaign office. But we can give her the funding she needs to win.
Can you chip in $3 to help Jane Dittmar overcome these intimidation tactics and turn this House seat blue?
