Today we begin with coverage of Hillary’s visit to Little Rock AME Zion Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Charlotte Observer reports:
Standing at the pulpit, Clinton mixed Bible verses with headlines about black men who have been shot by police and others in recent years – including Scott, whose death sparked days of nationally televised protest, some of it violent, in uptown Charlotte.
“It has been 12 days since Mr. Scott was shot and killed. Twelve days since his wife, Rakeyia Scott, watched her husband die, and seven children lost their father,” Clinton said. “We don’t yet know all the details about the shooting, but we do know this community and this family is in pain.”
Clinton also spoke about the killings of police in Dallas and Baton Rouge and Philadelphia. “The families of fallen officers have been dealt a great blow, and they deserve our prayers as well,” she said, drawing murmurs of approval from the pews….
Meredith Bolden, 22, a churchgoer who sat in a back pew with the press covering Clinton, said the Democratic candidate’s words spoke to her.
“She was very assertive and was very clear in understanding what we want as a black community,” said Bolden, a former supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders, Clinton’s opponent in the Democratic primary. “I’ll vote for her.”
The video of her whole speech to the church is on Youtube.
Early on Saturday morning, Hillary Tweeted a policy document with additional information about the National Service Reserve she had announced in Florida on Friday. The particular time was a reference to unhinged Tweets from her opponent the day before.
I noticed that the Hillary Speeches site used this occasion to put up a story pointing to all its coverage of Hillary’s policy statements this season. The site is a tremendous resource from a devoted volunteer and this collection is remarkable. Here is just the July — September portion; check it out!
LeBron James has endorsed Hillary for president.
I support Hillary because she will build on the legacy of my good friend, President Barack Obama. I believe in what President Obama has done for our country and support her commitment to continuing that legacy.
Like my foundation, Hillary has always been a champion for children and their futures. For over 40 years, she’s been working to improve public schools, expand access to health care, support children’s hospitals, and so much more.
She wants to make sure kids have access to a good education, no matter what zip code they live in. She’ll rebuild schools that are falling apart and put more money into computer science. She’ll make sure teachers are paid what they deserve so they can give everything to their students.
The campaign put together a really lovely video interview of Hillary’s childhood friend Betsy Ebeling.
A huge collection of Star Trek personalities has announced its support for Hillary against her terrible opponent in a campaign on Facebook called Trek Against Trump.
Star Trek has always offered a positive vision of the future, a vision of hope and optimism, and most importantly, a vision of inclusion, where people of all races are accorded equal respect and dignity, where individual beliefs and lifestyles are respected so long as they pose no threat to others. We cannot turn our backs on what is happening in the upcoming election. Never has there been a presidential candidate who stands in such complete opposition to the ideals of the Star Trek universe as Donald Trump. His election would take this country backward, perhaps disastrously. We need to elect a president who will move this country forward into the kind of future we all dream of: where personal differences are understood and accepted, where science overrules superstition, where people work together instead of against each other.
The resolution of conflicts on Star Trek was never easy. Don’t remain aloof –vote! We have heard people say they will vote Green or Libertarian or not at all because the two major candidates are equally flawed. That is both illogical and inaccurate. Either Secretary Clinton or Mr. Trump will occupy the White House. One is an amateur with a contemptuous ignorance of national laws and international realities, while the other has devoted her life to public service, and has deep and valuable experience with the proven ability to work with Congress to pass desperately needed legislation.
