Just days after she said that Donald Trump was “absolutely” a role model for children, New Hampshire Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte is saying she won’t vote for him:
I wanted to be able to support my party’s nominee, chosen by the people, because I feel strongly that we need a change in direction for our country. However, I’m a mom and an American first, and I cannot and will not support a candidate for president who brags about degrading and assaulting women. I will not be voting for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton and instead will be writing in Governor Pence for president on Election Day.
Ayotte had been playing all sorts of word games, saying she didn’t endorse Trump but supported her party’s nominee, and occasionally criticizing him, as when she declared herself “appalled” by his attacks on Khizr and Ghazala Khan. But she remained a Trump voter through those attacks on the Khans. She remained a Trump voter through his attacks on Alicia Machado. She became a Trump voter after his attacks on her buddy John McCain. The list goes on and on and on. None of those things, individually or in combination, was enough for Kelly Ayotte to give up on Donald Trump.
So, sorry. The fact that she finally dropped Trump the day after we all heard audio of him talking about sexually assaulting women, not in one specific instance but as a habit, does not wipe Ayotte’s slate clean on this one. We’ve all seen how craven and unprincipled she is, and this months late, thousands of dollars short change of position won’t change that.
Kelly Ayotte has a strong Democratic opponent in Gov. Maggie Hassan. Can you chip in $3 to help elect Hassan?
