Securing his position as the senator a bag of hammers feels most insulted by being compared to, Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson says he can't wait to campaign with Donald Trump. Furthermore, he's convinced that the combined factors of Trump at the top of the ticket and the Republican blockade of a Supreme Court nominee will result in a GOP landslide which will carry him back into office.
Johnson, 60, said in an interview with CNN that his demand to let the next president decide the Supreme Court nominee will be a boon for him in his closely contested race with former Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold. And if the Supreme Court doesn't move voters, he thinks Trump will.
After Johnson toured a metal factory here in the Milwaukee suburbs, he said that Trump as the GOP nominee would benefit Republicans down-ticket by turning out voters who may otherwise choose to stay home—particularly in northern Wisconsin and in rural corners of the state. He seems to have no problem campaigning with Trump, either.
"Stump with Trump?" he quipped when asked if he'd appear on the campaign trail alongside Republican front-runner. "Just because it rhymes: It'd be the Ronald (and) the Donald."
Besides, he says, he hears that "Trump is running very strong up in the Northwest (part of the state)... that should also help me a bit too." Never mind that former Sen. Russ Feingold, his Democratic opponent, has held a consistent 10+ point lead in the polling on this race.
There's also the PPP polling in Wisconsin finding that 62 percent of Wisconsin voters believe the vacancy should be filled this year, 76 percent "think the Senate should at least see who gets put forward before making a decision on whether they should be confirmed," and 53 percent "say they’re less likely to vote for Johnson because of his refusal to consider a nominee."
That's all just facts and stuff, though. Johnson's not going to be bothered by any of that. When has it ever stopped him before?
