As expected, the United States Senate today rejected all four amendments seeking to stem the tide of American gun violence. The two Democratic-backed amendments would have required background checks for all gun sales and prohibited individuals on the terror watch list from purchasing guns; the two competing Republican amendments would have increased funding to the background check program while requiring no new checks, and would have instituted a 72-hour delay when someone on the terror watch list went to purchase a gun, during which time law enforcement could go before a judge to "prove" the suspected individual was sufficient threat to disallow the sale.
In mostly party-line votes, all four failed to muster the necessary sixty votes to reach cloture, and so nothing will be done today—at least, not by the Senate—to prevent dangerous or terrorism-minded Americans from readily purchasing firearms.
