Comparing the first night of both the Democratic and Republican conventions, the Democrats came out slightly ahead (though the ratings agency admitted to probable undercounting of ours since Bernie Sanders spoke past 11 PM, when they had stopped tracking).
Apparently, people liked what they saw on Monday, because the ratings disparity is now turning into a rout.
The GOP’s "WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE” approach to conventioneering doesn’t appear to have much appeal. Meanwhile, the Democratic approach to love, acceptance, tolerance, and hope looks to be working. Not to mention: Having compelling speakers matters. During the time slot Michelle Obama was speaking, Trump had that Ultimate Fighting guy. While Bill Clinton was speaking, Trump had the manager of his winery. Trump promised celebrity star power, and delivered Scott Baio.
On stagecraft, Democrats are putting on a superior show. On content, Democrats are putting on a superior show. It’s mindblowing just how much better this week is. And if people are watching and sticking around (something they didn’t do last week)? That bodes well for when the convention bumps following both weeks are ultimately tallied.
