Deborah Ross is putting North Carolin's Senate seat in play, closing in on Republican Sen. Richard Burr. Here's just one more issue where she's taking him on: Social Security. She's won the endorsement of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare on an issue where there's a huge gulf between the candidates.
"I've met people who have worked their whole lives, but are putting off retirement because they don't know if they or their families can afford it. They don't know if Social Security will get cut or Medicare will get privatized, and they don't have the money to take that gamble," said Deborah. "Not only is Washington not helping, but politicians like Richard Burr are making matters worse. He voted to cut Social Security and took more than $1 million from insurance companies while writing a plan to privatize Medicare and raise the eligibility age. That may be good for the insurance companies' profits, but it will force seniors to pay more. I'm proud to have earned the endorsement of The National Committee to Protect Medicare. And when I say I'll protect these benefits, folks in North Carolina know that I'll stick up for them."
It was a no-brainer for the NCPSSM and its 61,000 members in North Carolina. Burr has gone so far as to advocate for cuts to existing Social Security payments, but he's saved his real plans for Medicare. He has his own plan for turning it into a voucher program. Not only does he want to privatize it, he wants to raise the eligibility age and increase premiums seniors pay for it—none of which is sustainable for the millions of people nationwide who rely on the program for their health care.
It's a no-brainer for North Carolina seniors, and it's a no-brainer for every voter. Do we want a Senate that fights to make life harder for seniors, or better for them?
