Raw Story reports that Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin, who was given the Distinguished Christian Statesman award at the Values Voter Summit on Friday, made a rather head-turning speech to that group on Saturday evening.
Apparently Gov Bevin thinks that the potential election of Hillary Clinton as President will bring us to the brink of “...going one way or we’re going the other way, politically, spiritually, morally, economically, from a liberty standpoint. We’re going one way or we’re going the other way.” Worse, he seems to think that this directional choice could lead to some kind of physical confrontation (although he hopes they can use non-physical means first) that might even require that one or more of his NINE children shed some of the wet red stuff.
He encouraged the audience to fight in every possibly [sic] way so that they aren’t forced “to do it physically.” However, he argues that it may come to the shedding of blood.
“I will tell you this: I do think it would be possible, but at what price?” he said, after being asked if he thought America would survive Clinton. “At what price? The roots of the tree of liberty are watered by what? The blood, of who? The tyrants to be sure, but who else? The patriots.”
He continued wondering whose blood will be shed in this possible physical confrontation. “It may be that of those in this room. It might be that of our children and grandchildren. I have nine children. It breaks my heart to think that it might be their blood that is needed...”
Meanwhile, the entire speech seems to be loaded with paranoid generalizations about how these “values voters” are somehow losing out… but there are little to no specifics on how, exactly, this is happening. We all know that this group, and it’s many other right-wing, fundamentalist-Christian “sibling” organizations, are against things like same-sex marriage, reproductive choice, separation of church & state, etc. But other than the marriage issue, none of these things are new; nor did any of them come about because of anything either President Obama or Hillary Clinton have done or propose to do.
So why he thinks that they are at this imaginary “crossroads” now, or will be in November, is a mystery. Also, he doesn’t appear to say how he thinks Donald Trump would be any better for these “values voters”.
Here’s the full video (which Raw Story attributes to RightWingWatch.org)… see if you can figure out what he thinks he’s losing, or stands to lose, in this “war”… besides his children, who are probably wondering why their father is volunteering them for sacrifice.
