Remember how a few weeks ago the Freedom Caucus maniacs were all "we're going to quit the Republican Study Committee cuz it's too establishment" and there was going to be a big splinter and the Freedom Caucus would get all the spoils and more power? Something in that formula didn't work for them, so now they're talking about a new plan. Kind of.
Members of the group of far-right agitators are considering a plan to run one of their own as a candidate for the Republican Study Committee chairmanship this fall in a bid to push the conservative group further to the right.
Seizing control of the RSC would be the latest show of clout for the group of about 40 conservatives, which in its mere two-year existence has upended the House Republican Conference and infuriated GOP leaders with its no-holds-barred legislative tactics. […]
Freedom Caucus insiders say the group hasn’t committed to backing a specific candidate, and they could still decide to abandon the RSC in a mass exodus. But at least two caucus members, Reps. Andy Harris of Maryland and Trent Franks of Arizona, have expressed interest in running for the post.
Which I read to mean that one or two of these guys got this idea in their heads and decided to run to the nearest reporter with it. Because organization doesn't really seem to be their strong suit. Being assholes, that they have achieved. Making life hell for former Speaker John Boehner and now for Paul Ryan? They're very good at that, bless their souls. What is likelier to happen is that they piss off all of the slightly less maniacal RSC people, who then throw their weight in with what passes for the moderates in the Republican House, which might just strengthen Ryan's hand a bit.
They should give up on this idea. The schism is a much more fun one. So is the rumored coup against Ryan. That's even better. They should definitely do that one.
Can you help make Paul Ryan's life even more difficult and chip in $3 to get more Democrats into the House?
