Let’s be clear about something right away: Fuck Paul Ryan. After Trump issued his horrifying executive order on Friday—Holocaust Remembrance Day—barring Syrian refugees from coming into the U.S. and suspending immigration from seven Middle Eastern countries, did the speaker of the House object to the chaos Trump was causing? The families he was splitting apart? The cruelty being meted out to beleagured fellow humans fleeing unthinkable carnage? The recruitment tool he just handed ISIS? The damage to America’s international reputation?
Of course not. Ryan is all aboard:
Our number one responsibility is to protect the homeland. We are a compassionate nation, and I support the refugee resettlement program, but it’s time to reevaluate and strengthen the visa vetting process. This is why we passed bipartisan legislation in the wake of the Paris attacks to pause the intake of refugees. President Trump is right to make sure we are doing everything possible to know exactly who is entering our country.
Some fucking compassion, asshole.
Meanwhile, Democrats are shredding Trump and those who stand with him. Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton, an Iraq combat veteran, was scathing:
And Nancy Pelosi piled on:
As the Statue of Liberty holds her torch of welcome high, there are tears in her eyes as she sees how low this Administration has stooped in its callousness toward mothers and children escaping war-torn Syria. This Administration has mistaken cruelty for strength and prejudice for strategy.
Exactly right. Not only is Trump’s order cruel and cowardly, it will make us much weaker, not stronger. But Paul Ryan only cares about staying on Trump’s good side so that he’ll cut taxes on the wealthy—refugees and immigrants and America’s standing in the world be damned. He can get well and truly fucked.
