Whether any given moment or time in life is “the best of times” or “the worst of times” usually depends on my own perception.
I wouldn’t say that I have it all that great at this point in my life (and that’s somewhat of a disappointment!) but I don’t have it all that bad either.
And times have certainly been been worse than they are now and for a lot of people, things ARE worse.
There’s a lot of people in “helping professions” (social workers, counselors, etc.) that have helped me to get to the “glass half full” space that I currently occupy.
And then there are the volunteers; people that come out to, say, a homeless shelter or a residential treatment home or a food bank or a soup kitchen; people who, on their on free time, do so much more than ladle soup into a bowl, wipe down tables, or provide needed computer training.
Volunteers can often be the first ones to greet you with a smile or say hello or strike up a conversation with you.
Volunteers in such situations have often been the ones that reminded me of my own intrinsic worth as a human being exactly when I seemed to have forgotten that I was a human being.
Nowadays, I don’t do much volunteering beyond one area that I won’t mention. But in previous times, I have ladled the soup, fixed meals, assisted with resumes and simple computer training and the like.
And I would love to assist with some sort of literacy program; I have gotten a joy out of reading for almost my entire life and I think that’s one of life’s simple pleasure that others might like to enjoy but can’t.
And one thing that actually being the volunteer has taught me: I always have the ability to give back. I always have something that I can share with someone less fortunate.
And, on some days, I need to know that I can contribute to life with no thought of getting anything in return.
Today’s question: Do you volunteer for any causes? Food bank? Soup kitchen? Any other service-oriented volunteering? Heck, even a regular political campaign?
