In my experience, there are two types of people when it comes to being handy at taking care of or fixing things. The first type is those that do. The second type is those that don’t. Another interesting observation I’ve had is these types never seem to change. I’ll give you an example.
My dad had a completely different type of upbringing than I did. He was pretty much out of my life by the time I was seven years old, except between the hours of 2-5 PM on Sundays, so I didn’t really get to grow up with a dad in truth. Back in the 1960’s, when people divorced, they always gave the kids to moms no matter how horrible they were. Now, thank God, they give the kids to the responsible adult.
Anyway, my dad grew up pretty high on the hog. His dad was a surgeon who was “well connected” with banker types and the like. They had a live-in maid who not only did all the cooking and cleaning but also took care of most of the job of raising the kids. It’s something that folks do who can afford it. Personally, I think it’s a cop-out because kids are just commodities to them. They are like some possession that someone else is responsible for.
Well, my dad is helpless when it comes to doing nearly anything around the house. He never was taught how to do things because his dad would always hire someone to take care of whatever needed doing. This led to dad having a huge blind spot IMO. Once when I was four years old and dad was still living with us, I watched him attempt to change a light bulb. He stood up on a three-foot ladder and unscrewed the bad bulb. When he tried to put a new bulb in, he thought he needed to use a screwdriver for some reason to scrape off the socket (wtf?). He touched the screwdriver to the center of the socket and the metal shaft then touched the side of the socket. ZOT! Big flash of light. It caused him to fall off the ladder melted the aluminum socket and blew a fuse.
My dad never does anything. He hires folks to do even the simplest things. When I’ve visited him, I offer to do little things around his house, but he won’t let me because he has a basic belief that only people you hire to do things know how to do things. Weird.
I on the other hand always prefer to do things myself if I can. The main reasons are it’s way, way less expensive and I typically do a better job than anyone I could hire. I care about what I’m doing vs. just getting a job done. If I don’t do a super job, because it’s the first time I’ve ever done the chore, it’s still better than it was before. Plus it gives me satisfaction to try to figure out how to fix something and attempt to do it myself. In truth, you can do most anything yourself that doesn’t require strange equipment or tools. I hire people when some heavy machinery is needed because I don’t have experience in using that stuff, but otherwise, I do the job myself.
Fortunately, we have computers, the internet, and youtube videos. You can find a tutorial about fixing almost everything. People who know how to do things are more than willing to teach you for free. Cool.
