During the past week, Santa Cruz has come up in conversations three times. Each of these conversations was initiated by folks in my office. Of course, this made me nostalgic of the 14 years I lived in Santa Cruz. I lived in six different places over those years. Four of them were within close walking distance of the ocean. When I lived in these places I made an effort to visit the beach almost every day. Why live in a beach town if you don’t go to the beach all the time?
From the last place I lived in Santa Cruz, with smileycreek, we’d walk down 26th Avenue for five blocks to the ocean. We’d watch the tide tables closely. When there was a particularly low tide, as in well below normal, we could do what we called “the walk.” When the conditions were just right, we could walk from the 26th Ave. Beach all the way to the Capitola Beach on beaches the whole way.
For seven years in a row, I’d play beach volleyball on the Capitola Beach at 2 PM every Sunday, unless the weather wouldn’t allow. I love beach volleyball. It's tough to run and jump, but you can dive all you want into the sand.
Thinking about that got me reminiscing about my favorite beaches. Those would be the ones I frequented. When I turned 16 years old and could drive, the first place I went to was San Francisco. Driving from Denver to San Francisco took 24 hours. When I was young, I’d do it in one shot. Nowadays, I do it in two days stopping overnight in Salt Lake City. Actually, that's a bit generous. I really do it in 2 1/2 days, first spending the night in Reno, which is about 5 hours from where I live. Then it's another 11 hours to SLC and another 11 hours to Denver. The beach I first started to frequent was Ocean Beach in San Francisco (they were really creative in naming this beach).
When I was 16, Bernie and I went to the City Lights Bookstore and ran into Allen Ginsberg. We talked with him and found out he was actually living in Boulder, Colorado then. He was creating his Naropa University there at the time. He gave us his address and told us to come visit. We did. That’s where we also met Peter Orlovsky. Wow! He was a nut job and a half.
The second beach I went to was in Oregon when I lived in Portland. Driving west on the Sunset Highway got me to Cannon Beach right near Tillamook (where they make Tillamook cheese).
Most of the beaches I’ve been to are all on the West Coast. Another beach I loved in Santa Cruz is the Natural Bridges State Park Beach. Monarch butterflies winter over there on Eucalyptus trees. It’s an amazing thing to see.
When I lived in Santa Cruz, I’d regularly go down to Big Sur and hang out in the hot tubs at Esalen and also Cafe Nepenthe.
Right there is Pfeiffer State Park Beach. A fun thing to do is wait for sunset at just the right time of year to experience this:
There are so many more beaches I’ve been to. One of my favorites is Agate Beach at Patrick’s Point, CA. Patrick’s Point is magical. If you ever get the chance, go there. Camp out for a few days. It’s located right at the beach and just a few short miles from huge redwood forests.
What are your favorite beaches?
What do you want to talk about today?
