Donald Trump’s approval rating among Republicans dropped to the lowest point of his presidency Thursday—75.2 percent—in a Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll. Trump’s numbers have been on a steady decline ever since hitting 82.9 percent last Thursday, with the erosion in support starting to register about two or three days after a flood of reports on his firing of James Comey and his now infamous Oval Office meeting with Russian operatives.
Prior to now, Trump’s lowest point was 79 percent approval among Republicans on the day he was sworn into office, January 20. Reuters writes:
While Trump remains popular with members of his own party, many rank-and-file Republicans appear to have backed off their support for the president during the past week.
Among Republicans, 23 percent expressed disapproval of Trump in the latest poll, up from 16 percent in the same poll last week. The decline in support from Republicans appears to be a primary reason why Trump's overall approval rating is now at the lowest level since he took office.
This could be the beginning of the end, folks. If Trump continues to lose support among the GOP base, already skittish Congressional Republicans are going to flee like rats to save themselves.
