Tuesday night’s State of the Union address by President Joe Biden far exceeded expectations that even partisans had for the event, which has become pretty boring over the years (see Donald Trump’s years of vacuous addresses). Joe hit all of the important points and leaned into his strength as a politician—his conversational, avuncular style.
This contrasted perfectly when juxtaposed with the performance art from the other side of the aisle, which was a lot of grievance-driven crybaby inanity. Add to that the wild disarray of the Republican Party, and the combination was even more exciting for those watching at home. Part of what heightened Republican vexation during the SOTU was that their ineptitude and childish antics were not simply easily side-stepped by Biden during his address, but that Biden deftly used their only tool—political theater—against them.
The operatives of the Republican Party have spent the better part of the last 24 hours trying their best to misinform the public, because not only did President Biden best them, his performance reminded many that reality, too, has bested them.

A quick review of the night from an old colleague.
And then we step way down to hear what Boring Loebert had to say. What gem of wisdom will she drop into America’s laps?
I mean…that’s just…
It’s soooo wrong.
Here’s a Republican representative from Utah. No, not Mr. Mike “I’m full of shit” Lee; a different one.
That’s a very expensive carton of eggs.
Back to Sen. Mike Lee and the Republican operatives that tried and failed to pretend they aren’t ghouls.
And, of course, the world’s most embarrassing CrossFit proponent, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene went back to her office to record, in her wild white outfit, a video saying that Joe Biden was hard to understand because he was “yelling at everybody” during his speech. It’s wild. She literally says that. The responses were appropriately disrespectful.
Sorry, Kevin McCarthy had a thing to say.
God. Even his tweets are boring nothingburgers.
Finally, here’s a reminder of what actually happened on Tuesday night.

We're chatting with one of our favorite fellow election analysts on this week's episode of The Downballot, Kyle Kondik of Sabato's Crystal Ball. Kyle helped call races last year for CBS and gives us a rare window inside a TV network's election night decision desk, which literally has a big button to call control of the House—that no one got to press. Kyle also dives into his new race ratings for the 2024 Senate map, including why he thinks Joe Manchin's unlikely tight-rope act might finally come to an end.
In their Weekly Hits, co-hosts David Nir and David Beard recap big developments in two Senate contests: Rep. Adam Schiff's entry into the race to succeed Dianne Feinstein, and the GOP's unexpected show of unity in the open-seat election in Indiana. They also dissect the first poll of this year's hotly contested race for governor in Kentucky and highlight another 2023 battle that shouldn't get overlooked: the race for a vacant seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
