Let Them Eat War: Why Blue Collars Vote Bush

Wed Dec 24, 2003 at 09:13:03 PM PDT

Howard Dean touched on the subject with his comments about confederate flags etc.  This is a very important issue to grasp so the blue collar males might learn to vote their best interests. Arlie Hochschild, a sociologist, examines the dilemma of the bubbas with great insight.  Any active Dem wanting to sway the white male voters needs to read this article.

it's because they are philosophers... they are not just trying to get for themselves, they actually care about principles.

If they figured out that Bush doesn't, that would make a difference, otherwise... they are actually being very noble in what they attempt, but being misinformed and still quite gullible (at least statistically), Americans voting their principles often vote against themselves.

Fascinating read. But the thesis suggests Bush's popularity is built on a teetering house of cards, with blue collar Nascar dads likely to turn on him when they figure out they've been had.

All the more reason for the Repubs to push for unlimited eternal war and fear. Otherwise, there'll be time to think.

But how to explain if we've now gotten Saddam? Where's the need?

  •  "Bubbas" is very, very insulting. (none / 0)

"Blue Collar" and "Bubba" don't match. A bubba is who gets colliqually referred to as poor white trash. Blue collar is an entirely different thing. There are not very many bubbas, because they are, throughout the "heartland" of America, the group of people (mostly men) who are abusing the disability system so badly.

However, Blue Collar built the house you live in, so simmer down ...

"Simmer down" is very, very insulting bubba. I happen to be a blue collar southerner and I know whereof I speak when I call these fools who vote against their best interests if Rush tells them to.  They deserve a much more insulting moniker than bubba.
