Dean at $14,193,791.81

Tue Dec 30, 2003 at 10:09:44 AM PDT

As of Tuesday at 8 AM, the Dean campaign has posted a total of $14,193,791.81 in fourth-quarter contributions.  They are encouraging supporters to surpass the third quarter's official total of $14,831,982.61 in the remaining 40 hours of this year.  That $638,190.80 or $15,954.77 per hour.

My guess is they will raise $15.3 million.  Yours?

When I paged down far enough, I saw Kos's post on Dean's total to date.  Sorry!  I was away from my computer much of yesterday--hosting a mother-in-law who thinks Bush's bullsh*t smells like roses.

So how do we get her to believe otherwise?

Oh, Ptolemy, she's a lost cause on the political front.  If affirmative action comes up, she self-righteously declares that she doesn't like it because it prevents "true equality" for everyone.  If you reply that she must therefore support civil unions, she would angrily declare that homosexuality is a sin.  If you reply that our Constitution guarantees a separation of church and state, which ought to preclude the automatic codification of Christian morality into law, she would angrily declare that the Christian fathers of our country never intended for us to ignore the laws of Scripture.  If you point out that Thomas Payne and Ben Franklin were most likely atheists and that Jefferson and Washington were deists, she would rail about the liberal media.

Of course, she would single out the ClenisTM as the root cause of all our problems.

She is always correct and deeply resentful of any fact that might show otherwise.

Tell her that Bush's faith-based initiatives will allow witches to run drug rehab programs.

It doesn't always convert the listener, but it's never failed to get their attention.

Some might say that this is unfairly using witches for political gain, so if you are a witch or feel uncomfortable with witches being used in this way ... substitute Jew.  I don't mind and it actually works almost as well.

Let me be the first person to ever go on record to predict that Howard Dean's campaign has peaked.

Of course, when you're #1, there's no way to go any higher.

      Mmm, novel concept!

I've caught up on the main thread from yesterday about Dean's fourth-quarter numbers, and it's clear that, as people compare his current numbers to last quarter's, they are quick to say he has peaked.  But as BSJinx so ably pointed out, Clinton's and Gore's fourth-quarter fundraising in '96 and 2000, respectively, fell off considerably.  Clinton raised only 64% of his record-breaking third-quarter total in the final quarter, and Gore raised only 56%.  Indeed, Gore barely cracked $4 million.  We should all be thrilled that two of our candidates are shattering that total.

If Dean's numbers had followed this trend, he would have raised 60% of his previous $14.8 million, just under $9 million.

How much do you want to bet that the first reports on Dean's fundraising neglect to mention that, in matching or slightly exceeding his third quarter total, he has achieved what Clinton and Gore could not?  Then again, Trippi probably already has the press release written.

I also wonder how the other campaigns, apart from Clark's, will be affected by the news of huge disparities in fundraising.  Americans always seem to follow the money.  Who will believe Lieberman, Gephardt, or Edwards when they claim that they can compete?  Will many people see Kerry's huge loan to himself as anything more than a desperation move?
