Is Kerry running for VP? continued

Tue Dec 30, 2003 at 09:28:54 PM PDT

I forgot to mention in the below post: it's based on the idea that Clark has already offered the VP spot to Kerry and they are cooperating behind the scenes.    Remember that Kerry wanted the #2 spot from Gore pretty badly in 2000, and was on the short list, which means that Gore's campaign already did the necessary vetting.  (Because of the need for vetting, Dean could NOT have made a similar offer to Clark).

Clark's claiming Dean offered him the VP slot then sounds like classic Republican projection.  If Clark says Dean offered the slot to Clark, it really means that Clark offered the slot to Kerry.

Dude, you should send this to Mickey Kaus. Or maybe Bill Safire.

This kind of stuff just doesn't appeal to me, like all the speculation about Al Gore's motivations and Hillary's big plans. Who the hell knows what's going on behind the scenes or in these politician's heads? This is like astrology or something.

    Bold claim.  Nonsensical, but bold.

won't happen because if Kerry steps aside to run for VP his seat goes republican

But that was true in 2000 as well, and Kerry wanted the VP slot with a vengeance then.  When Gore gave it to Lieberman, Kerry looked like his dog died.

Nothing about Clark makes me think this would be true. As a matter of fact I think it was a misunderstanding between Dean and Clark. The way I see it Dean said somthing along the lines of "if you don't run, I'd like you to think about being my VP." Not an outright offer. Just a discussion.

Won't happen.  If Clark is supposed to win, then he needs Kerry to step down before NH so he can take second and get momentum going into SC--it could make the difference between winning and losing SC for Clark.  But if Kerry were to do that, it would really piss off his supporters, because it would say he wasn't even trying in the one match-up he could hypothetically get momentum from.

That's an interesting point, but Kerry's numbers are dropping to zero.  Clark is likely to take second in NH with or without Kerry still around, especially if Lieberman drops out.   Also I don't think Clark needs to do well in NH.  He's focusing on Mini Tuesday.

Not in NH.  IIRC according to the ARG poll, he is the only one besides Dean over 15% (that is, above the line getting delegates.

When you see someone smart doing something incredibly stupid, you would think there is some hidden explanation for all this.

    In this case, no.

Smart people sometimes do really stupid things, like mortgaging the house to finance a political campaign that has been a total flop.
