I've often wondered why the Pro-Lifer supporters haven't come to realize that there's a very simple way to get rid of, or at least severely marginalize the practice of abortions:
make them unnecessary!
How? Well, who's the biggest opponent to abortion? Religious institutions. What do they have a lot of? People and money. Why not create a national support base for women who find themselves with unexpected pregnancies that provides them with EVERY resource necessary to provide for their family and eliminate most, if not all, of the concerns that bring a woman to feel she has no other option.
The republicans would be wholly against this, trumpeting "personal responsibility", but the pro-lifers should have to decide whether they're wish for less dead fetuses is greater than their opposition to "hand-outs". And I get the impression that Jesus was more the "help your fellow woman" guy than the "the woman must learn to deal with the consequences of her actions" guy.
I said it was simple, not easy. But it'd be a much more Christ-like approach, and if Mr. Died on a Cross for You-Jesus is your co-pilot, the difficulties a program like this would entail would pale in comparison to what the Man did for you.
