They just don't get it.
`Sept. 11 was a defining moment for our nation,'' the chief White House spokesman, Scott McClellan, said. ``It was an experience that all Americans shared. It is the reason we are still at war on terrorism.''
"Because of that day, we are at war against terror," Karen Hughes, a campaign adviser for President Bush, contended on the ABC program "Good Morning America." "The race for president is now on, and it's important that we look at how the two candidates would approach that war against terror."
WE NEEDED TO BE FIGHTING AL QUEDA BEFORE 9/11, YOU IDIOTS! EVEN IF THERE HAD BEEN NO 9/11, WE WOULD STILL NEED TO BE FIGHTING IT!
I know I've been harping on this, but we need to be sure to push past the he-said she-said Giuliani vs widows debate over the "taste" of these ads, and make days 2 3 and 4 about substance. So 9/11 happened on Bush's watch. So what? That should make us vote
for Bush? Why? If he's such a hero, why is he hiding from the commission?
These ads are tasteless because they claim that the Bush administration's greatest failure--its failure to focus IMMEDIATELY on the terror threat--is some kind of virtue: "strong leadership," which apparently means getting lots of money from fat cats to make pretty commercials.
And speaking of fat cats, how soon can we start mercilessly mocking that Bush in wide-angle shot that closes the commercials? He looks like David Byrne in Stop Making Sense.
