As I keep seeing poll numbers showing a race in which Nader's sliver of the electorate actually could make the difference in November, I wonder if people think there's a chance Ralph could come to his senses and endorse Kerry at a strategically crucial moment, potentially tipping the race and redeeming Nader's own place in history.
It's a tough subject to analyze, because if the guy saw things rationally he wouldn't be in the race to start with. Add to that his incredible stubbornness and by all accounts mammoth, reality-defying ego--and his obvious personal pique at the Dem establishment. But after arguably throwing the 2000 election, and having seen the stakes raised even higher after four years of abject misrule, I just can't accept that he'd follow a course of action that would be so obviously ruinous for the country.
I hope he'll stay in through the summer, making a critique of Bush from so far left that Kerry comes off as the more moderate and palatable alternative, then drop out and endorse the Democrat in mid-October--possibly negating whatever nasty October Surprise Rove has cooking. Am I nuts?
