I have been speculating about who leaked the story that Bush has consulted a criminal defense lawyer in relation to the Plame investigation. This story is obviously not good news for Bush.
Who could have this knowledge?
Who would be willing to leak this story?
This is insider information that only a few trusted White House insiders would know about: Bush, Laura, Rove, Andrew Card, Condi, Cheney, Gonzales, and maybe members of Gonzales' staff. Unlikely that any of these are the source of the leak.
That leaves the Grand Jury, Fitzgerald's investigative team, Jim Sharp's office (Bush's new lawyer), or a smart investigative journalist.
The Grand Jury and Fitzgerald's team have been very tight lipped. Sharp is out, because the original story didn't know his name, that came from the White House. Journalists don't investigate any more.
My speculation is that the White House (Bush and Rove) leaked this story on purpose. Why? Because the Plame investigation is going to get very big and very hot for Bush soon, so they are conducting a "modified limited hang out" approach. When Bush is asked to testify to the Grand Jury, they will spin it as old news.
The supporting evidence for this idea is that the White House press office immediately confirmed the story with a well prepared statement, and that Bush had a semi-coherent response to a question about it the next day. It seems like a planned White House leak to me.
In this scenario, the timing of Tenet's resignation could be to get "Bush gets lawyered up" off the front page.
