The returns are in, and once again, voters have chosen the most experienced and quite possibly the most electable candidate, Jan Schneider. So this year's general election features a rematch between the two contenders in the 2002 election--and this time, Jan Schneider has a real chance of defeating Katherine Harris.
The FL-13 primary campaign featured four candidates who were very close together on the issues, so the campaign mainly turned on who was the most electable. The campaign was overwhelmingly positive, and I heard or saw no attacks on each other from each of the contenders, save Floyd Winters' mild dig at the "millionaire lawyers and banker" running against him. He finished last, BTW.
There's plenty of background on Jan Schneider on her website. While she has not held elective office, she has worked on legislative matters for 25 years as an environmental lawyer, and has authored two books and numerous articles. She also worked on the Clinton/Gore campaign in 1996, and co-chaired the Clinton inaugural of 1997.
This year, with Democrats set to turn out heavily for Kerry, is the best year ever to send a Democrat to Congress from the 13th District. This Congressional district has traditionally been Republican, and was ably represented (from what I understand) by Dan Miller until his retirement in 2002. Her opponent in FL-13 is Katherine Harris. Need I say more? Let's send Jan some turkee and help her boot the Princess back to Longboat Key, where she belongs!
