Anyone have any idea why they find it so noteworthy? The US Army has spent the last 40 years turning their Guard & Reserve units in Alaska into cold weather specialists. Sending them to Iraq (unless on the Turkish Border in Winter) would be a waste. OTOH, Afghanistan in winter is a lot colder...
The other factor is that Alaska is relatively unpopulated...
I don't know if the lack of Alaskans in the KIA total is likely to help Murkowski keep her seat though, I don't know whether Knowles is raising Iraq as an issue. He's pretty conservative on some issues and Alaska politics can be relatively strange compared to the lower 48...
