I've just seen a preview screening of the new film "Silver City," by director John Sayles.
Set in present-day Colorado, it is the story of an ambitious but simpleminded man from a powerful family, running for governor while hiding a past of personal immorality and business scandal. Sound like anyone we know? Chris Cooper gives a great performance as the candidate, an uncanny mix of ignorance, privilege, charm, piousness and ruthlessness. Richard Dreyfuss plays a Karl Rove-like character. Entwined with the political stuff is an old-fashioned murder mystery - a dead body appears in a lake, becoming the subject of investigation by a rumpled PI (actor Danny Huston) and in fact the movie works pretty well on that level too.
The movie opens this Friday. Go see it - I think you'll like it! And take an undecided voter with you and talk about it afterwards!
