Soros Supersizes "Troll Goal"

Tue Jan 13, 2004 at 04:51:22 PM PDT

The "Troll Goal" on the Dean blog is a fund which supporters drop money into, whenever a troll comes around.  It's meant to punish trolling by turning the negative energy of the attack into positive energy for the campaign.

George Soros must have been reading the Dean Blog:

Billionaire George Soros, probably the single biggest giver to Democratic causes, said Monday that Republican criticism of him could be very costly.

"It has got a rise out of me," he said, adding that his anger "will probably find expression" in additional donations to efforts to defeat President Bush.

How much, Soros wouldn't say. He already has given $10 million to Americans Coming Together and $2.5 million to www.moveon.org, groups that are running anti-Bush campaigns.

I'm in the $1500-$1999 range in giving for Dean, which is somewhat atypical for me, seeing that I had previously given only $50 to McCain in 2000.  The really surprising thing for anyone who knows my family is that my wife fully supports this level of giving.  We have more than $60,000 in student loans, another $25,000 in other loans and credit cards, and two young kids, but we're determined to give until it hurts to help defeat Bush.  My wife pretty much despised politicians until she heard Dean on Meet the Press, and in spite of the fact that it was a horrible, disastrous appearance that short-circuited his candidacy before it ever really got rolling, she fell in love.  Now she gives $20 automatically every month, which, by the way, is one quarter of her monthly allowance (same as mine).

Every time I bring this up, I fear it will come across as bragging.  It isn't.  It's an example of what millions of perfectly ordinary people need to do in 2004 to save our country.  I would be perfectly happy to take out a loan and give the money to Dean and other Democrats.  It's a far saner choice than mortgaging our future with the Republicans.

Oh, I've also given to a congressman this cycle: Leonard Boswell of Iowa.

Somehow I thought I was responding to your post..Congrats

I've donated about $550 so far.  If Dean is the nominee, I'm planning to donate at least as much for the general election, if not more.

I respect the sacrifices you are making.  I don't think it's bragging to talk about your level of contribution, but we do kind of have an aversion to talking about money in this society.  Whether or not we talk about our individual contributions, what we've achieved together is amazing.

I know I haven't maxed out to Dean, but I can't remember how much I've given. I usually wait till the end of the quarter to throw in, unless one of my friends has a house party or something.

Then there is MoveOn. I was enraged by the RNC's "some are attacking the President for attacking the terrorists" ad, so I kicked in $200. I've given various smaller amounts to them since 2002.

As I said to a Chicago Tribune reporter who was surprised by my level of support for Dean, I'm a computer programmer with little responsibility and  too much disposable income.
