Just got back from seeing The Yes Men. It's a film that documents the guys behind yesmen.org and their WTO hijinks from a year or two ago.
As a film it's so-so, I'll give my detailed thoughts after the jump.
Film basically documents a few pranks the Yes Men did in the name of the WTO. These guys are brilliant at coming up with satire at the expense of the Rich and Powerful. If anyone needs a ribbing it's the WTO, but the film itself never builds an argument. The filmmakers expect the audiences to be aware of the inherent evil that is the WTO.
Which is fine for someone like me who is totally aware of what's been going on and is receptive to the filmmaker's message. But its very confusing and and nonintuitive to the rest of the audience.
Say what you will about Michael Moore, but he creates a clear thesis and then backs it up. These guys are more attracted to the behaviors of the Yes Men themselves and it's not as interesting as I was hoping for.
Yes what they've done is fascinating, but it didn't wear well for 90 minutes, at least in the hands of these filmmakers.
Check it out, it's inspiring what sort of madness you can get away with, and also illuminating to see that when you lie with a straight face and a credential on a business card, most people will believe you.
