Field Notes: John Kerry
Reports from the campaign trail

By Ed O'Keefe

Excerpts:

"At the Senator's first press availability in five days en route from Manchester to Laconia, NH, the Senator spoke for six minutes with his traveling press corps before remarking, "I feel so cob-webby today."

"In Laconia, 400 people filled the Elks Lodge with an overflow crowd. Kerry, who arrived nearly a half hour late for his first and only event of the day, abbreviated his stump to a twelve minute presentation..."

"Kerry stormed onto the "Real Deal Express", ripped off his Timberland Barn Coat, and tossed it into the gray and red striped seat by his side.  "Don't they get it?," Kerry bellowed to no one in particular. "I can't have this," he continued, referring to the media horde now watching his every move. David Wade, traveling press secretary, entered the bus and immediately faced the Senator's wrath. Thrashing his arms, Kerry asked several times, "Where are my boots?" Once located, the previously nervous Kerry seemed a bit more serene."

Is Kerry losing it?

  •  hmm (none / 0)

i don't think the diary is posted to show kerry is "unstable" or "angry."

it's to show the freeride that kerry is getting compared to the drilling that dean gets.

(furthermore, it shows that kerry is trying the bush strategy - hide from the media)

  •  Imagine the pressure (none / 0)

It just goes to show the kind of pressure these guys are under.

Running for President is like getting on a psychotic roller coaster.

Dean, Kerry, Gephardt, Edwards, and Clark all have my admiration.

That's just great.  It's like psychological torture.  We've developed an election process guaranteed to deliver a total basket case to the White House.

I guess the All Anti-Dean All The Time crowd has been joined by the AA-KATT team.

  •  Yawn (none / 0)

It's pretty clear at this point that not only does the media intend to crucify whoever the Democratic nominee is, but that they're so bloody lazy about it that they intend to recycle the same fucking smear.

John Edwards or Joe Lieberman could surge to the front of the Gallup polls tommorow, and on Sunday, we'd have headlines just one degree removed from "Why does John Edwards/Joe Lieberman hate kittens?"

  •  Campaign from Washington (none / 0)

I have no idea of the veracity of this story, but Kerry's in a position where he can afford to chill on the trail and tend to business in the Senate. He can get plenty of free media on issues of his choosing, avoid moments, and get lots of sleep.

  •  the rest of the story? (none / 0)

What's more pathetic:  Kerry getting tired of being in a swarm of humanity or a whiny Kerry hater's selective cut and paste job?

In Laconia, 400 people filled the Elks Lodge with an overflow crowd. Kerry, who arrived nearly a half hour late for his first and only event of the day, abbreviated his stump to a twelve minute presentation, then took forty-four minutes worth of audience questions. After the event, as is quickly becoming custom, a media swarm engulfed the candidate, eventually forcing Kerry to wade step-by-step into a throng of immovable reporters, cameras, and stills. Having finally broken through the crush of media, Kerry stormed onto the "Real Deal Express", ripped off his Timberland Barn Coat, and tossed it into the gray and red striped seat by his side.

"Don't they get it?," Kerry bellowed to no one in particular. "I can't have this," he continued, referring to the media horde now watching his every move. David Wade, traveling press secretary, entered the bus and immediately faced the Senator's wrath. Thrashing his arms, Kerry asked several times, "Where are my boots?" Once located, the previously nervous Kerry seemed a bit more serene.

  •  Sounds like he was ambushed by rival supporters (none / 0)

He probably has good reason to be cranky.  Wonder if anyone will spin it?

The most dramatic scene at Thursday's debate occurred before most of the press arrived. Senator Kerry, who stands six foot, four inches tall decided to walk from the "Real Deal Express" to the debate site several hundred yards away.

Before taking ten steps behind a bagpipe band, supporters and small representatives from rival campaigns surrounded the Senator, chanting "Kerry no More" and "Clark '04". As Kerry continued down the road, a swarm of rival campaign supporters attempted to get close to the Senator. Given the enormous press and personal contingency, the campaign fought its way through screaming opponents, near fisticuffs, and several downed reporters and internal supporters. By the conclusion of Kerry's walk, three local police officers had been called over to control the crowd.

  •  Oh my God! It's over. (none / 0)

We just lost the nomination. A media covered  nervous breakdown. Kerry is toast.

Or maybe we should just take a chill pill. Kerry supporters: Just relax (but not too much as NH is still wide open IMHO). Deaniacs: It'll take a little bit more than that to take us down. Didn't you learn from Iowa? We can take a few punches.
