SPAM from Edwards

Mon Jan 26, 2004 at 06:52:25 PM PDT

Why am I getting spam from the Edwards campaign? I never asked for it, and yet it suddenly has been appearing in my inbox... so who the hell is selling my info, and why can't Edwards get his own supporters?
I recieved an email Friday from Senator John Edwards, today I got one from Nick Baldick at the Edwards Campaign. Now I've visited his site...cause I wanted to know more about him and his policies... but I never signed up for anything. This leads me to believe Edwards is buying lists from somewhere... Frankly it pisses me off. Has anyone else been getting Edwards emails they didn't request or sign up for?

It should be an unwritten rule, especially as the Internet grows in political influence, that lists of emails aren't bought. If you can't attract and engage your own supporters then don't. I get enough junk on a daily basis...

I've been getting spammed by Edwards too. I only find it a little bit annoying, but it's not a very wise move for the campaign.

Yeah, I got an Edwards e-mail on Thurs. or Fri. despite never visiting his site or signing up for anything.  I immediately unsubscribed, as my money is still on Dean.

I started getting Clark spam a few weeks ago.  Although, to their credit, they haven't spammed me since I "unsubscribed" from their service (I use that term even though I never subscribed in the first place).

Are you sure it's official Edwards stuff, and not dirty tricks stuff? Does it have any content that smells funny?

I expect to see forged campaign spam anytime now...

Dear Sandy, The message is getting out and people are catching on. John Edwards IS the best candidate to beat George W. Bush. In a just-released, national poll by Newsweek, John Edwards has jumped to SECOND place. Across the country, people are responding. Just look at what has happened since the surge in Iowa: We've had 48,679 new supporters sign up on our Web site. We've raised $654,820 online. In the February 3rd states of South Carolina, New Mexico and Oklahoma, we've picked up key endorsements. In Missouri, we've established a solid team of veteran campaign workers including former Gephardt staffers. And in New Hampshire, our momentum is translating into steadily increasing poll numbers. John Edwards is speaking to packed meeting halls of tremendously enthusiastic voters at each event he attends. Every day, people are signing up to help the campaign because they know that John Edwards is the candidate who will fight for an America that works for all of us. Your support continues to make the difference. We couldn't be here without your contributions and hard work. But we must keep the momentum moving. Click here to contribute: JohnEdwards2004.com/contribute You saw what happened in Iowa when the momentum peaked: John Edwards got more than 30% of the vote at the caucuses, surprising everyone with his strong second place showing. Keep it going We've got to keep the momentum building, and you can help. Please contribute $50, $100 or $250 today. Every dollar counts in this tight race for the nomination, and we need to keep spreading the word face-to-face and on television that John Edwards is the best candidate to beat George W. Bush in November. We're getting closer, and you can help us close the gap. Thanks for all your support -- let's keep the momentum going! Someone about a week ago reported getting Edwards spam from the same address where he (she) was getting DSCC stuff from. Don't know if that's the same stuff.

  •  This is standard campaign practice (none / 0)

All campaigns buy lists -- lists of voters, their addresses, phone numbers and even emai addresses. It's how they get their message out. I think there should be some process for hot it's done, though. It should be disclosed early on in the email that your email address has been purchased and that you are not being signed up, but that a quick email return will automatically sign you up for their postings. It's a compromise that I know I could live with. For heaven's sake, it's a lot more relevant than those penis enlargement spams (as if I needed that -- just kidding, does it work?).
